Is a Travel Agent Right for Your Next Vacation? Here’s a Honest Breakdown

Artificial Intelligence. Online Booking Engines. Travel Advisors (Travel Agents).

They all have their place.

I use AI almost every day. It’s an incredible tool as it helps me research, brainstorm ideas, organize complex information, and become even more efficient for my clients.

But, here’s the important part: AI can only respond to the prompts you give it. It doesn’t know what you forgot to ask, and it certainly doesn’t know the questions you didn’t know to ask. And while it’s often remarkably helpful, it’s not always correct. Just check out my other blog post, "Why Your AI Trip Planner is Set Up to Fail You" and how it can hallucinate and lie to you.

The same is true for online booking engines like Expedia, Booking Dot Com, and countless others. They’re fantastic tools for travelers who love planning and booking everything themselves. If you enjoy digging into destination research, comparing hundreds of hotels, analyzing reviews, and handling every detail on your own, DIY travel may be the perfect fit for you.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!

Coffee Experience

The Barista Analogy: Two Different Experiences

I like to compare travel planning to coffee. You can make a great cup of coffee at home. Millions of people do it every morning. It is less expensive, convenient, and you control every ingredient.

Or...

You can walk into your favorite local coffee shop, where a skilled barista recommends something new, knows exactly how to prepare it, and creates an authentic experience, not just a cup of coffee.

Neither choice is wrong. They’re simply different.

Why Specialized Travel Expertise Matters

Travel is also a lot like healthcare. Your primary care physician is perfect for routine checkups and everyday concerns. But when something is complex, highly specialized, or deeply important to your life, you don’t rely on general advice alone. You seek out a specialist.

Yes, seeing a specialist often comes with a higher fee or co-pay. But you’re paying for years of hands-on experience, focused expertise, and the ability to spot nuance that others miss.

Travel works the same way. Many destination specialists and travel advisors charge professional planning fees for custom-designed itineraries.

Why?

Because we’re not simply pushing buttons to make reservations. We are investing hours researching, designing, coordinating seamless logistics, leveraging trusted relationships around the world, anticipating potential roadblocks, and crafting a journey personalized specifically for you.

  • You’re paying for expertise

  • You’re paying for experience

  • You’re paying for white-glove service

  • You’re paying for an advocate who is in your corner before, during, and after your trip

The Real Value: Finding the Right Partner

  • Could you book it yourself? Absolutely.

  • Could AI help you draft an outline? Definitely.

  • Could an online booking engine get you there? Probably.

But when your milestone anniversary, multi-generational family vacation, luxury getaway, or bucket-list adventure truly matters, having an experienced advisor in your corner makes all the difference.

The least expensive option isn’t always the best value. Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t just the hotel. It is having someone who already knows the answers before you even know the questions to ask.

At the end of the day, it comes down to this: Find a travel advisor you trust. Build a relationship with them. Be loyal.

When you invest in that partnership, the right advisor will return that loyalty tenfold. They are learning your exact travel preferences, advocating for you at every turn, and always keeping your best interests at heart.

That’s a relationship no search engine, booking website, or AI prompt can ever replace.
